After that, some of us will move downstairs to enjoy company, and perhaps a meal. Change Happens…
May 18th
We learned just hours before our event was ready to live that our guest speaker, Krista Neher, was a victim of the airline industry’s characteristic carelessness with their customers’ schedules. These things happen, and we took it in stride. After all, we’re a club, admission is free, it’s a social event where we learn and interact. We can view change as a disruption or as an opportunity. Our choice was opportunity.
Instead, we created a forum event where the topic of discussion was “Social Media and Privacy–Where Do You Draw the Line?” The discussion was engaging and active–sometimes hyper-active, and the result was at the end of the night, nobody was ready to stop talking. We stumbled upon a very good recipe for engaging the members at our meetings and a new format for some of our presentations.
Out of this meeting, expect to see a few changes in the club. We will continue to bring guest speakers to join us, and we will plan to bring Krista to Evansville as soon as we work out the date. But we’ll also develop more opportunities where you have a voice as well, and can share your insights through forums like last night’s meeting.
We will also add a Member’s area to the website, where those who would like to be listed can have their name, and social media accounts listed for connecting with others.
The last change will be a form on the website where you can submit topic ideas, questions, and comments about the meetings, that won’t be published automatically to the website. You can make suggestions or ask questions in private, or you can submit comments to posts here, on Twitter, or on Facebook. It’s your call.
Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s Social Media Club of Evansville event. It was a huge success, and in some ways, our best one yet!

April 14th: Citizen Voices: Social Media’s Impact on Conventional News and Customer Care
Mar 30th
The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce that Tamara Wandel will present the sixth and final Andiron Lecture of the 2009-10 academic year. Wandel is an associate professor of communication at the University of Evansville. She holds a 2009-10 Fellowship with the Society for New Communications Research, a global think tank focused on advanced studies of new media and communications. Wandel’s most recent publications include a co-authored essay in Facebook and Philosophy (an Open Court publication due out later this year), a chapter in Social Communities, and an article regarding bereavement and online communities in the Journal of Public Relations Research. She teaches media writing, news copy editing, strategic public relations, and advanced reporting.
From participatory journalism to consumer-generated content, the landscape of citizen voices has been altered forever due to social media. The impact and immediacy of disseminating information is at once impressive and unnerving for media outlets and corporations. This lecture will discuss the results from two original research projects. The first focuses on a study undertaken to examine the frequency of use and preferences for social media by journalists. The second captures information on consumer usage of social media to learn about and share both positive and negative customer care experiences. Also examined is the impact customer care via social media has on corporations and organizations working within the context of an uncontrolled environment.
The lecture begins at 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, April 14, 2010
Room 254, Eykamp Hall, Ridgway University Center, University of Evansville
A social gathering with beverages begins at 3:45 p.m.
